Honors Peer Coaches are trained, current Honors College students, who support the Honors Counselors with assisting Honors students with all things Honors! They primarily assist with supporting the Honors 101 class, helping students discover, design, and start Honors experiences, and answer general Honors questions.

Position Information

  • Modality: this is an in-person position. Peer Coaches work in the Honors Experiential Learning Lab.
  • Honors students can meet with Peer Coaches either by dropping into the ELL, or requesting an appointment. Students can request in-person or virtual appointments.
  • Hours: Peer Coaches generally work during the ELL operating hours, but have options to work outside those hours as requested or needed.
  • This is a paid, hourly position. Students can opt to work between 10 (minimum) to 19 (maximum) hours per week.
  • Training is provided prior to the start of the semester.
  • Positions begin the first day of classes and end the last day of classes. Eligibility to work outside those dates are determined as needed.
  • Positions are per long-semester (fall & spring). Peer Coaches wanting to return are evaluated at the end of term for eligibility to continue.

Eligibility (requirements are at time of application)

  • Must have completed one semester in the Honors College.
  • Must have completed HON 1000 and at least 2 experiences.
    • Preferred qualification: participated in the Honors Experiential Learning Fair
  • Must have a minimum UTSA GPA of 3.0. 
    • If selected as a Peer Coach, students must remain in good standing in the Honors College.
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. ·
  • Must be eligible for work study. Note sure if you are eligible? Students can stop by OneStop & speak with a representative.

Job Duties

  • Assist students via drop-ins in the ELL or appointment requests.
  • Experience support: exploration, advising, and approvals.
  • Honors 101 support:
    • Responsible for 101 grading.

    • Honors 101 student outreach and communications.

    • Host Honors 101 office hours.

    • Conduct Honors 101 SPICES experience workshops.

  • Honors Academic Team support:
    • Academic Team events.
    • Honors course promotions.
    • Assist Honors Counselors with communications & outreach support. 
      • Peer Coaches have staff emails & must utilize & maintain the staff email for all position correspondence (with students and Honors faculty/staff).
    • Other duties as needed (ex: researching experience opportunities, help in maintaining the ELL space).

Applications are accepted year-round, and positions are filled as needed. The main cycle for applications is below, and completed applications will remain on file in the event a spot becomes open during the academic year.

  • Fall term:
    • Deadline to apply for fall term consideration is April 1st.
    • Applications are reviewed and students are notified within 2-3 weeks after the deadline.
    • Interviews are conducted in May, after final exams.
    • Training will be conducted the week prior to the start of classes.
  • Spring term – spring positions are considered only if there are spots open. A notification will be posted in Monday Messages.
    • Deadline to apply for spring term consideration is October 1st.
    • Applications are reviewed and students are notified within 2-3 weeks after the deadline.
    • Interviews are conducted in early November.
