Description: The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program, funded by the Department of Defense (DoD), is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students. SMART offers scholarships for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students currently pursuing a degree in one of the 21 STEM disciplines. SMART Scholars receive full tuition, annual stipends, and employment with the DoD after graduation.

Award: Minimum 1-year of funding and must complete at least 1 summer internship. For each year of award accepted, the student must serve in 1 summer of the internship and work for 1 year at the same sponsoring institution following graduation.

Applicant Profile:

  • Applicants must by pursuing a STEM degree in 1 of 21 fields
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • 18 years or older
  • Be able to get and maintain a security clearance
  • Applicants in Computer Science fields are especially encouraged to apply.
