Application Year: 3rd-year students (by standing or years attended). If you are a transfer student or are a senior graduating early, please check with us about eligibility.

UTSA Recipients: Margot Duque (2023), Sanah Jivani (2019), Gretchen Harting (2002)

Description: President Truman did not want a brick and mortar monument. Instead, he encouraged a living memorial that would give life to the values of service that had animated his career. In that spirit, the Truman Foundation is a place that nurtures and supports future generations who answer the call to public service leadership. The award is for students seeking a career in public service, broadly defined.

The foundation selects 55-65 students annually. The Foundation only reviews approximately 600 nominated applications (not counting applications of those who compete at their campuses but are not nominated). UTSA is allowed to nominate 4 students each year for consideration and an additional 3 students who have spent their first one or two years at another institution.

Award: Maximum of $30,000 for graduate school in any program except for an MBA.

Campus Deadline: December 1 each year

Applicant Profile: Trumans are working in the West Wing, sitting on the US Supreme Court, and serving in federal and state legislatures. They transform nonprofits, deliver crucial services and organize for change in local communities. Truman Scholars are leaders in academia, research, and health care. They can be found in every branch of the Armed Services. And many make a difference beyond the borders of the United States.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen or U.S. National
  • Must be committed to public service
  • Obligated to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation-funded graduate degree program

Award Pathways: Truman Scholars can be from any discipline, but should have a clear idea as to how their career direction will address public service and how they will be a leader.
